ASSISTING EUROPE

U.S. OBJECTIONS.

“'AMERICANS CARRYING LARGEST BURDEN.”

Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. Received Januarv 31, 2.15 p.m. WASHINGTON, Jan. 30. The United States Chamber of Commerce recommends an international conference of financiers, for the purpose of examining Europe’s condition and recommending action. The Secretary of State has sent a letter to the Chamber, pointing out that the United States’ Treasury is opposed to further Governmental / aid to Europe, that since the armisl Tice the United States had extended V four billion dollars’ credit to Europe, and that the Treasury does not favour such a conference because it is apprehensive it would revive hopes that the United States would make further loans to Europe. Mr Glass adds that it is unthinkable that the American people, who are carrying the largest imaginable direct tax burden, should undertake to remedy the conditions of exchange resulting from the less drastic taxation adopted by the other Governments of the world.
