THE FUTURE OF GERMANY.

Writing of the future of Germany Mr Vlastimil Tusar, Prime Minister of the Czecho-Slovak Republic, asks; Is it probable that the Germans will now free themselves from the Prussian outlook and mode of thinking? It is not ingrained in the original German character. It has been grafted on them by their ruling classes and has found the most fanatical proselytes just in those portions of the people which by their descent are not German, as for instance the Silesians, Saxons and Prussians, who, with few exceptions, are Germanised Slavs, and have forced their nonGerman character upon the true Germans of Swabia, Franconia, and the Rhine, and even on the Bavarians . The policy of power, steeped in hatred, was ineritahly wrecked in a conflict with a superior force, which must remain undiminished until the process of internal renovation be completed among the Germans. And even to-day, at this historic turning point, the powers of darkness are again at work, openly and secretly—striving to realise, when the present spell of exhaustion has been overcome, tie old schemes of world-power, and to bring the old traditions and aspirations to triumnh -by !im oid method,: of . 1;u rbc.v are, at the same lime, fresh forces in operation that make for an emancipation of soul and heart from the trammels of the past, and that aim with hopeful energy at conducting the new Germany out of the straits of a sombre reaction to the saving ideals of democracy. It is on the isshe of this struggle of spiritual forces that future position in the world depends.
