COAL AND SUGAR.
MB. MASSEY’S REPLY TO DEPUTATION.
(Per United Press Association.) WELLINGTON, January 13
Replying yesterday to a deputation of Wairarapa farmers, Mr Massey said that people looked far too much to the Government to do things for them. If a man wanted a pound of sugar lie telegraphed to the Prime Minister’ to know whether it could not be sent him by post. It was much the same with petrol, and coal. The Government was becoming a trading concern. He did not think there need be any anxiety for some time regarding coal. As to sugar, the Refining Company’s works at Auckland were working night and day. ■ . . i ... A member of the deputation asked if Mr Massey thought that hoarding was going on, and Mr Massey replied: I do. I can’t account for it any other way.” The Auckland concern was turning out 1200 tons weekly. He hoped the strike in Fiji, which was serious, would not affect the sugar position.
