THE TAINUI DISASTER.
ALLEGED BE,BACHES OP WAR REGHLATIONS ACT.
(Per United Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, January 28. Frederick John Needham, manager of the shipping’ department of the" New Zealand Refrigerating Company, and Claude Smellie, shipping clerk in the employ of the same company, appeared before Mr McCarthy at the Lyttelton Courthouse this morning on a charge that they did by negligent act, to wit by loading on board the steamer Tainui at Lyttelton certain benzine in leaking receptacles, and improperly stowed"', endanger the safety of the said ship contrary to the regulations made under the War Regulations Act. Frederick Wm.-Partridge, manager of the Vacuum - Oil Company, at Christchurch, was charged that he did by negligent act procure the loading on board the Tainui at Lyttelton of leaking receptacles and improperly stowed same, thus endangering the safety of the ship. The charges were made by the Marine Departmnet. Defendants asked that the case be remanded, and Captain Marciel, Government Marine Superintendent at Lyttelton, stated that the Department made no objections to the granting of a remand. The Bench consented to a remand nine die.
