WANGANUI CALEDONIAN SOCIETY.
Intending competitors at the Wanganui Caledonian Society’s Sports gathering, to be held in Cook’s Gardens on Saturday, ,7th February, are reminded that entries for ‘all events close with the secretary, Mr J. Syme, on the 31st inst. The programme is a very attractive one, including no fewer than 33 piping and dancing events. Ten field events, comprising throwing the hammer, wrestling, putting the shot, caber tossing and other items also figure on the bill of fare, and the fact that the scorer of most points in the open shot, hammer and caber events will be entitled to hold the Fleming memorial medal, valued at 10 guineas, for a year, will help to draw big entries. This medal will become the property of any competitor winning it twice, not necessarily in successive years.. The tug of war will be another event which should create great interest. This will be open to teams of six men, and it is expected that teams from Wellington, Palmerston North and other districts will compete’. The valuable Gatto Cup will go to the winning team for 12 months. The running events are for amateurs and they are sure to fill well. A team of fifteen is coming down from Auckland, some of the Wellington cracks will be represented, and entries from other outside centres and from local men will serve to make up big fields. Altogether the gathering promises to be a great success from every point of view.
