A DARING BANDIT.
OUTWITS ms PURSUERS,
CASPER (Wyoming), Nov. 20. William Carlisle, train bandit, walked into the Western Union office here to-day while scores of heavily-armed men sea relied the surrounding country for him and sent a telegram to the Union Pacific Railroad office in Cheyenne, thanking the railroad for the money he secured from passengers on Tuesday night. The message read:— “Union Pacific, Cheyenne.—Thanks for haul on your limited. Some detective force! (Signed) Carlisle.”
DENVEE., November 20. William Carlisle to-day had outguessed seven posses, a troop of United States cavalry ant? the keenest sleuths of,the Union Pacific Bailway, hunting him for train robbery following his escape from Bowlines penitentiary in a wooden box.
The latest authentic cine to Carlisle’s whereabouts came from Casper, Wyo., where he was said to have entered a newspaper office and nervily inquired how the chase was progressing. Another theory that ho had entered Denver on the Union Pacific freight train caused the local police to throw out a drag-net. Carlisle is conceded by the authorities to be the most daring train bandit ever appearing in this region. The search for the escaped convict _ is the biggest man-hunt ever staged in the West. His escape from prison in a shirt packing-case and his single-handed holdup of a Los Angelos Limited on Tuesday despite the presence of an armed guard on the train, were on a par with his former exploits. The manhunt to-day still centred at Medicine Bow, near which town Carlisle leaped from the limited train after walking among the passengers of a tourist sleeper and collecting 400 dollars. The general belief is that he is not far from the railroad line in Wyoming, or is in hiding with friends. Carlisle’s success in robbing trains is partly attributed to his years of service as a brakesman on the Union Pacific Railroad, following his cow-punching experience.
