WANGANUI COUNTY COUNCIL

ENGINEER’S REPORT. 'The following report was read at the meeting of the Council on Friday last;— The engineer, Mr R. R. Dawson, reported-: . KAITOiUii RIDING.—The roads in this Riding are m a fair state of repair. The road grader has been employed on the side roads where necessary, and general - repairs have been affected. A considerable quantity of maintainancc metal has been delivered by ahe Council’s teams to the No. 1 Line, which with the use of the road grader will be sufficient to maintain this road for a few months. E AUK ATE A HlDlNG.—Maintenance metal will be required for the; Long Acre and Waikoupa roads to the extent of 500 and 300 yards respective’y. This work, however, can be carried out most effectively about February, when ilht roads will be in good condition for carting, the replacement of the culvert at Waikoupa Road junction could also be clone to the best advantage about that time. MANGAWHFjRO RIDING.—Tie execution of the road formation contract at Pitangi has been discontinued, no work having been done by the contractors since last month, therefore it will he necssary to re-let the contract. The widening of the track at Parikino has been completed. A grader team has commenced grading work on the Pariheuhou road, and will proceed with the reformation of the Mangahowhi and Te Komai roads also, which work should be rompleted by the end of the year. While the team* are in this locality, it would be wise to metal about ten chains or the Parihouhou road on a shaded sidling near the Mangahowhi junction, which would cost about JBO. Plans are practically completed for the construction of a ferro-concrete bridge at Upokongaro, and I would recommend th ait tenders be invited for the construction of same to be received early in January, which would enable the successful tenderer to obtain material preparatory to- commencing the work about iho end of March, when th© bulk of ihi season’s traffic would be completed. The question of providing for the traffic during the construction of the new bridge will require to he considered and decided upon before tenders are invited. There must necessarily be a certain amount of inconvenience to the traffic during the progress.of the work, and the question to be decided is whether the traffic should be diverted across the river by ferry or what expenditure should be involved in the construction of a temporary bridge, which would bo governed by riie weight of loads to be carried. The deviation of Liam ore-road has been completed and a first-class job has been obtained. The road roller is at present employed rolling the Parapara road to Up-okoMga.ro. MANGAMAM U RIDING. —A road grader team has commenced grading the Wangaehu River road to Ngamatea, and when completed the remaandefr of the roads about Mangamahu will be likewise treated. f

PITRUA RIDING.—Owing to. the early dry season the Council’s horses have been sent out to the back roads for grading work, hence it will be necessary to provide for maintainance metal on the No. 2 Line by contract. With the exception' of the No. 2 Line the roads in this Riding are in a fair state of repair.

GENERAL.—It will be necessary to immediately commence the engineering surveys and\complete the plans for the expenditure of Government grants before March Slat. —Adopted.
