WAR STRENGTHENS BRITISH POSITION IN SHIPPING.
The Parliamentary Secretary of the Ministry of Shipping in a recent report gave figures which show that the position of British shipping in relation to the rest of the world has been strengthened rather than weakened as a result of the war. Before 1914 Great Britain lacked 1,500,000 tons of possessing half of the world,’s tonnage. The war loss aggregated 7,500,000 tons, but the present tonnage in British ownership totals only 3,500,000 tons less than that of the whole world. The report says; “The relative position of the country is not, therefore, regarded as materially weakened.”
