LOCAL AND GENERAL.

The Counties’ Association has decided to hold a Dominion Conference of delegates prior to the opening of the next session of Parliament. The New Plymouth Borough Council on Monday evening passed a resolution asking the Town Clerk to furnish a report on the matter of a scheme of superannuation for Council employees. While a little boy named Richard Way, of New Plymouth, was having an altercation with other ooys on a vehicle, he was knocked oil and fell to the ground. A broken collar-bone was the result. -■>- Christchurch telegram states that to-day’s meeting of the Lyttelton Harbour Board adopted a report recommending that the salaries of the permanent staff be substantially increased, and that the Board should establish a superannuation fund under the National Provident Fund Act, im, the membership of the fund to be compulsory for all new employees of the Board. At the meeting of the Licensing Committee to-day, the actirig-chairman (Mr A. L. mgneii) commented upon the short notice before the meeting given by the Health Department to licensees and owners of hotels of alterations and repairs required to be carried out before the annual meeting. Mr Bignell said that the reports were dated Wellington May 23rd. This was too short, at least two or three months were required. He said the Committee proposed writing to the District Health Officer asking him to allow in future at least three months before the annual meeting. A not altogether rosy picture was painted of the port of Foxton at Monday’s meeting in the Council Chambers (says tho Manawatu Standard). It was stated that duping the past month only two vessels had crossed the bar, the more lucrative freights to other ports of New Zealand having diverted shipping to such places. Mr F. J. Hennessy remarked that whereas in past years pilotages had brought the Harbour Board handsome profits, the revenue from this source wos now worth little as so few ships were coming to the port.
