FOOTBALLERS AND WHISKY.
- DISTURBANCE AT THAMES. THAMES, June 2. As an aftermath of the football match played between Hauraki Plains and City teams, a young man, named Frederick Clotworthy, aged 20, pleaded guilty in Court to-day to disorderly conduct in Pollen Street on Saturday evening. Sergeant Fraeer stated that accused was a member of the Hauraki Plains team. The police had been informed that the team had been supplied with whisky at the half-time, and again at the conclusion of the match. In the evening some of them became troublesome, and accused had to be locked up. The sergeant, in the interest of sport, urged the Rugby Union officials to stop thb practice of drinking at football matches. In answer to a question from the Bench, accused admitted that whisky was passed round among the team at half-time, but denied knowledge as to who supplied the liquor. Mr Lucas, J.P., who presided, remarked that this was a different sort of football to what he had known. Accused was warned and fined £1 and costs.
