Cable Association NEW YORK, April 8.„ Despatches from Paris say; Mr Hughes was interviewed regarding regarding the proposed Japanese amendment of the League of Nations covenant to recognise racial equality. Mr Hughes said: Australia cannot accept a proposal which strikes at the root of the policy we have long maintained, 'and which is vital to our existence.. The amendment, no matter how inocuous it may seem in form, certainly aims at giving the League' control of questions relating to immigration and naturalisation and matters which cannot be surrendered by any State without making it in effect a usbject State. Australia could not sign a covenant containing such an amendment.
