AMUSEMENTS & MEETINGS.

HIS MAJESTY’S. At Sis Majesty’s last evening the splendid programme presented received the greatest evidence of appreciation. “The House of Gold” is a powerful, well-thought-out story, interpreted by Emmy Wehleu and a fine supporting cast. A Metro-Drew comedy, the Co-op. Weekly, and a beautiful scenic complete a delightful evening’s entertainment. SURRENDER OF GERMAN FLEET. It would be Hard to name a more interesting film than “The Surrender of the German Fleet,” which commences at His Majesty’s to-morrow afternoon at 2.30. Every item of the surrender will be shown, including such historic events as the arrival of the surrendering fleet led hy the Soydlitz, the arrival of the German emissaries aboard the Konigsberg, the U-boat cemetery at Harwich, whereon countless sea pirates now slumber harmlessly; the long lines of sea-monsters emerging from the grey mists of the early morning, while some especially distinctive features are those showing the battleships and submarines as seen from aircraft. Admiral von Meurcr and his staff are seen aboard the battleship Queen Elizabeth, while several close-up views of Admiral Beatty will be shown. A big Triangle feature, “Her Decision,” starring Gloria Swanson and J. Barney Sherry, is included in the programme. The results' of the licensing poll in the different centres will be thrown on. the screen as they come to hand to-mor-row evening. , A DISTINGUISHED SOPRANO. MISS CARRIE LANCELEY. Miss Carrie Lanccloy, the English soprano, who made such an impression when appearing in. Wanganui a few weeks back, pays a return visit with her own company in the first part of next week, her season being from the 14th to the 16th (Monday to Wednesday). On these dates she will appear at His Majesty’s, rendering both popular and classical gems from her extended repertoire. She has a pure soprano voice of wonderful tone and quality, and the way in which she instantly captivated her audience during the recent Chautanqua season is a further guarantee that a treat is in store for all who attend, She will be assisted by Misses Doris Struble (solo pianiste), Ava Symons (solo vioTiniste), and Nellie Simpson (solo flantiste). In addition to the concert programme, a budget of attractive nioviug pictures will bo screened. An extra special attractio nhas been secured, entitled “By Right of Purchase,” starring Norma Talmadge. This powerful drama strongly illustrates how many in life, who are seeking for love, mistake the true for the false and the false for the true, and how easily wrong judgments may bo made. HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY. Time was when Wanganui had a strong Horticultural Society, the periodical shows of which were always an attraction. During the war, the work of the Society has had to give way to movements of pressing necessity, but several enthusiasts arc now working for the resumption. of the Society’s work, and a meeting of old members and all interested is to be hold to-morrow (Wednesday) evening with this end in view. The meeting will be held in the Borough Chambers at 8 p.m,, and a good attendance is hoped for.

A DUTCH COMIC OPERA. STUPENDOUS PERFORMANCE AT MARTON. It has been suggested (writes our travelling reporter) that a local effort should be made to induce the Chceros of Martou to give a performance at Wanganui. This company of amateurs is recognised as one of the best that has ever appeared along the West Coast, and as an evidence of the manner in which Rang! tike! has turned out to see the latest production, “The Burgomaster of Hagucodyk,” it may bo stak'd that the Town Hall at'Marton was filled in a way during the two nights of the season in a maimer never known in the history of Martou. The production is a. Dutch comic, opera in two acts, which was adapted and produced by Mr C. Bentley Russell, a well-known Shakespearean actor, who for health reasons is at present living in retirement at Martou, the music being selected from the best composers of the day by -Mr A. E. 8-atherly Crazier. Nothing to surpass the production has ever been given even, by the best itinerant companies, and Wanganui could count itself lucky if it could secure the talented combination for an evening's entertainment.
