POSITION AFTER POSITION TAKEN
(Received November 7, 10.0 a.m.) LONDON, November 6. A French communique says; On the whole French front, from the Sambre Canal to the Argonne, the German retreat continued in the day time, and attained at certain places a depth of 10 kilometres. Our first army is gathering the fruit of the severe battle yesterday, for our crossing of. the Sambre Canal completely defeated six German divisions. We have captured 4000 prisoners and 60 guns. We captured Guise during the first hour of the advance, which continued irresistibly, and by the end of the day reached Barzy, Esquieheries, Lavaqueresse, Crupilly, Malzy, Romery, St. Richaumont, and St. Housset, liberating numerous civilions. Further to the right we hold Laneuville, Marie, Bosmont, Ebouleau, Bucy, Les Pierrepont, and Dizy le Gros. Heavy fighting north-west of Chateau Porcien also caused a general retreat of the Germans. Our line now passes north of Waleppe and Hannogne and west of Chaudion and'St. Fergeux. We have captured Hearpy, Conde-les- Herpy, and Chateau Porcien, crossed the Aisne at Nanteuil, and in the Argonne, by a brilliant surprise, we have crossed the Ardennes Canal and the Aisne, passing far. beyond Montgon and Le Chesne, and reaching the ylllages of Pouvergny and Sauville.
