BOROUGH COUNCIL
FORTNIGHTLY MEETING. The Mayor (Mr C. E. Mackay) presided over the meeting of the Borough Council last night, when routine matters were dealt with. The following Councillors were present:—Crs. Alderton, Me CauL Sigley, Slipper, Burnett, Spriggens, Thompson, Gower, Liffiton, Dustin, Luxford and Hark nee?. Reports were dealt with as under:— SARJEANT ART GALLERY.—Re pine trees at rear of gallery; The committee recommend that the Council have those trees removed which are the rear portion of the building.—Adopted. WORKS.—The Committee reported ; Re Messrs Wright and Son’s application for permission to carry out extensions to building in wood, instead of in brick as required by the by-laws. The Committee cannot recommend their request being acceded to. Re Kitchener Street: The matter of improving this street has been left to the engineer. Be James and GilLman’s complaint of surface water from Watt Street flowing on to their property. The engineer is attending to this matter. Be Town Clock: The Committee has accepted Mr D. Lilburne’s offer to effect the necessary repairs to the dock of the sum of £24 10s.—Adopted. BE MOTOR VEHICLE— The Committee recommend that the motor truck quoted by Mr J. A. Smythe be purchased for £295 f.0.b., Wellington. Gas to Tramways: We recommend that the price for gas used by the Tramway Department be increased by 6d per 1000 feet as from Ist June, 1918. Adopted. TRAMWAYS.—Re Wanganui East Terminus: The Committee has asked the Engineer to report as to the cost i-f extending the line to the Wanganui East railway station, before the matter of erecting a shelter at the present terminus is considered. Re Shelter Sheds: The Committee has no recommendation to make in regard to the matter of erecting shelter sheds at the Hospital corner and at the Poet Office. —Adopted. GRAVKL-PTT.—A letter was read from Mr 11. Taylor Davies re gravel-pit in Mrs Richards' property at Brunswick, stating that th? duality of metal was of the best and accessible at little cost. The amount of metal was unlimited. — Referred to th? Engineer. COMPLAINT. —Mr J. King, taxi-cab proprietor, wrote complaining of the action of a driver of a cart which, he all* god, blocked his passage on the Dublin Street bridge when there was ample room to pull over in accordance wii.it th? ly-laws. —Referred to the Borough Solicitor. SWANKERS’ CLUB.—The S wankers' Club applied for permission to hold a sacred concert iu ULs Majesty's next Sunday.—Granted in the usual terms. REBATE.—The Returned Soldiers’ Association apniud for a remission on hire of Opera House for a re.cat lecture at which the takings were only X 3 Bs. Agreed to.
