THE LONG-RANGE GUNS.
Although, the 'report that the Germane were' bombarding Dover from Oetend with one of the new long-range guns wae officially contradicted, there was nothing improbable in the story. Professor Beusenbergcr, manager, or one of the managers, of Krupp’s Works, who is said in Germany to be the inventor of the gun, told a Berlin paper two years ago that artillery large and powerful enough to permit of England being bombarded from the Continent was among the certainties of the near future. The cannot of the future would, he believed, bs able to penetrate the stronapst fortified shelters and nullify “England's shimmering armament, the proud wall which for centuries has protected her.” General von Ehone, a German authority on ordnance, is also credited with saying that the bombardment of Paris was merely in the nature of a trial for guns which were really intended to bombard London. However,, they have not done it yet, possibly because the professor-manager has not ye* surmounted the difficulties presented by the facts that Dover is some 70 and London about 120 miles from Ostend, the nearet spot across the North Seain Goman occupation.
