THE PRICE OF BREAD.

(To the Editor.) Sir, —Further to the correspondence you published recently between this branch and the Board of Trade in connection with the price of bread in this town, may I again trespass upon your kindness to give publicity to the enclosed letters. It has been bronght under our notice (and we have documentary evidence to prove) that so high a price as Is per 41b loaf has been charged in Wanganui. This was booked price over the counter. Such coldblooded extortion, to put it mildly, can only be termed robbery, and such traders will be well advised to keep to legal prices in the future, or the intervention of the Board of Trade may have unpleasant consequences for these illegal profiteers. In conclusion I would ask the public to watch for the advertisement. Thanking you, Sir, —I am, etc., T. CARLYLE, Secretary Wanganui Branch A.R.R.S. April 25, 1918.

fCopy.) Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants, W’anganni Branch. Wanganui East, 18th April, 1918. Secretary, Board of Trade, W’eliington. Sir,—With further reference to the price of bread in W’anganui, I am instructed to bring under your notice tho position as it exists at present. W T c assume that it was the intention of your Board under the agreement with the bakers, that the price of bread for cash over tho counter would be 5d per loaf, no matter where or by whom it was sold. In this town bread is sold by grocers, greengrocers and confectioners. tho bread of course being obtained from the bakers ; the proprietors of those shops are charging cash over the counter.

If it is the intention of the Board that the maximum price of bread should be 5d cash over the counter, no matter where sold, or by whom, my branch suggests that a regulation to that effect, should he gazetted, and the dealers concerned notified.

As this is a matter of public concern, I will ho pleased if you will advise me of your Board’s decision.—Yours truly, T. CARLYLE, Branch Secretary. (Copy.) Wellington, 23rd April, 1918. Mr T. Carlyle, Branch Secretary, Amalgamated Society Railway Servants, Wanganui East. Dear Sir,—ln reply to your letter of the ISth instant, I am directed by the Board to inform you that an adveritesmeut will appear in the local press shortly, giving the decision of the Board in the matter.

A copy of tins advertisement is enclosed herewith for your information.— Yours faithfully,

(Signcdf J. W. COLLINS, Secretary, Board of Trade.
