There was a stormy scene at tlvc opening session of the International Trade Union Conference. The Central Powers' delegates occupied one side of the hall, and the Allies' empty chairs occupied the other. Mr Appleton's letter on behalf of British Trade Unionists fell like a bomb. It denounced German barbarism and declared that British workers refused to meet Germans. The latter's anger became red hot, and they shouted that the letter was full of lies.
