ALLEGED SEDITIOUS STRIKE
-CHARGES AGAINST UNION OFFICIALS. (Per United Press Association.) WELLINGTON, October 2. In the case against Thos. Young (secretary) and Frederick Howell (assistantsecretary), of the Seamen’s Union, ! Frank William Berry, bosun of the Queen of the South, who was calk;d by the prosecution but treated as a nostile witness, said he got no instructions from Howell, and he did not think he had any interview • with Detective Carney. The following statement was put in by counsel for the Union Company: “The matter of this dispute does not affect tne, but being a member of the Union i will have to stick to the Union; and, therefore, I went to the Union office on 7th September, and saw Howell, and asked him for the Union’s instructions. Howell said we were not to take a ship to era unless we had two men in a watch.” , In reply to counsel, witness said he did not remember making the sta,te;mon i could not deny it, but could (^member, it. Air Jackson, 'chief officer -of: Abe Huia, daid he on the vessel talking to the sailors. Later, witness was told by the lamp-trimmer that the men would not sail without two men in a watch.
