WELLINGTON LAND BOARD.
A meeting of the Land Board was held in Wellington on Thursday morning, members present being: Mr G. H. M. McClure (chairman), Messrs H. T. Ellingharo, G. Dawson. J. Georgetti, 0. Mclntyre. Eight applications for land were considered; four wore from returned soldiers, and the applicants being considered suitable men, t*ie sections were granteH. One individual applied for the surrender of his section, which the board resolved to accept. Fourteen land transfers were dealt with, several being discussed in committee and refused on grounds of policy. Mrs. A. M. Thompson applied to subdivide a section at Kairanga and transfer a portion to the Feilding Golf Club. The Wellington Education Board wrote asking that a further area of live acres' of the Education Reserve in the Wairarapa bo handed over to it for school purposes. With reference to a resolution of April 4th, 1916, fixing the improvements to be made by lessees under the Discharged Soldiers' Settlement Act, the Commissioner drew attention to the fact that in large areas of bush land th© enforcement of these conditions would put the lessee to very considerable expense. A letter was received from the UnderSecretary advising that the Crown Law Officers were of opinion that the accretion adjacent to section 227, Westmere S.D., extending along the sea coast to w-«st of Bamber Street, is Crown land. It was resolved to recommend that it be set apart as a recreation reserve, and vested in the Castleeliff Town Board. Two applications to split timber on Crown land were refused. The liratu Sawmilling Co. applied for an extension of term of license to mill timber on sections at Makotuku for a period of four years. It was resolved to point out to the company the necessity for taking immediate steps to re-erect the mill and resume cutting operations at the earliest possible date, so as to comply with the timber regulations, and to advise them that an application now for an extension of term is regarded as premature. It was further resolved to offer the company a permit to occupy the cleaerd portion of a milled area at a rent to be fixed by the Commissioner, and to occupiers re keeping down noxious weeds.
