* BIPLANE'S DERBY VICTORY. A REMARKABLE PERFORMANCE. (Australian and rf.Z. Cable Services.]) Received October 1, 10.15 a.m. SYDNEY, October 1. Biplane's time for the Derby has only been beaten by Noctuiform's record in 1905. The performance of the New Zealand colt on Saturday was all the more remarkable owing to the fact that in the early stages , Deeley had the greatest difficulty in holding Biplane, who fought for his head to such an extent that his supporters feared he would beat himself, but from the moment that he went to the front the issue was never in doubt. The attendance was estimated at forty thousand. The weather is dull to-day. "When Mr G.. D. Greenwood commissioned Mr J .Burton, to buy a yearling for him at the sale of the Shipley draft in the autumn of 1916, Biplane wasiiot the one he had in view, his choice being the Snowy River colt. Jhe latter, however, was sold to go"to Tasmania, and Mr Greenwood failed to secure anything. However, before the sale, Mr S. Green had arranged to have the Comedy King—Air Motor colt bought on his behalf, and that youngster was knocked down to Mr J. Samuel at 375 gs. Later Mr Green heard of Mr Greenwood's disappointment, and said he could have ther Air Motor colt at the price he gave for'him. A cable was sent to*Mr Greenwood to that effect, and the latter accepting the offer thereby securec) Biplane. The Snowy River colt, ifc may be added, has yet to enter the winning list. N.Z.
