George 11. Butler, whose name appeared in the recent ballot, enlisted nine months ago, and was turned down twice by the medical authorities. Ernest G. 11. Eoddy, who.se name appeared iu the recent ballot, enlisted on t-he 22nd October, 1915, and his name should have been starred. .. The Kev. Paul W. Fairclough, F.R.A.S., who died suddenly at Chriatchurch on Tuesday night, wa,s born in South Australia in 1852. He was educated at Xewington College, Sydney. In 1867 he came to New Zealand, and was appointed to I'he Methodist ministry, his first istatiou being Timaru, where he was installed in 187*. lie subsequently was stationed at Itangiova, Leeston, Hawera, Invcrcargill, Kaiapoi. New Plymouth, Lyttelton, Dunedm, and Wellington. He was appointed Fellow of the Royal Astronomical .Society in 1890, and was president of the Methodist Conference in 1897-N, and chairman of the Wellington Synod in 1904. Mr Fairclough had a high reputation as a preacher. He was a prominent ligu.re in the Methodist ministry, and for many years wrote astroonoTniosl notes for the press. He was a man of scholarly attainments and widely known and respected.
