STEAD! PROGRESS REPORTED. (Aus. and N.Z. Cable Aasn. aud Reutei.) LONDON, April 18. Sir Douglas Haig reports:—We further progressed northwards of Gouzeaucourt, near Uavrineourt Wood. Encounters occurred throughout the day west and north-west of Lens, where we continue to press the enemy. Hostile attempts to drive back advanced troops failed. Much useful aeroplane work was done on Monday, despite unfavourable weather. Three German aeroplanes were downed damaged. In most cases the enemy avoided combat. Five of ours arc missing. THE ROCHES TRAPPED. ENEMY COUNTER-ATTACK AT MONCHY. 2500 KILLED BY BRITISH. (Reuter.) - LONDON. April 18. Editor's Headquarters correspondent says: The Germans could not have timed their effort to re-take the village of Monehy more opportunely. At the very moment when we were ready to advance, they were massing iu two adjoining woods. The Germans emerging from Vert Salt woods were caught by a bombardment of shells, which devastated their ranksThe gained our front trenches before the village, after lierce hand-to-hand fighting. The British were ordered to allow the Boehes to enter a long, narrow trench as thickly as they pleased. They they were terribly enfiladed, and withered away. They fled in disorder, losing 2500 killed alone. One officer claims that he shot fortv before they bolted.
