Italian and Dutch telegrams show that Austria is active in her efforts to secure peace with Russia. Count Czei*uin has submitted delienite proposals to the Provisional Government, and has also appealed to the Pope to institute a peace proposal. Czernin will give the Socialists’ deputation a special passport to go to Stockholm.
SHELLING OF HHEIMS. NUMEROUS FIRES CAUSED Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. Received April 17, 2.3d p m. PARIS, April 16. Eight thousand shells pour into Rheims daily, and caused 25 fires ou Friday, similarly on Saturday. When a fire breaks out the Germans put an artillery barrage around the buildings to prevent fire extinguishing. SPAIN’S ATTITUDE. THE SAN FCLGENCIO INCIDENT. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. Received April 17, 2.35 p.m. MADRID, April 16. Romanones is.consulting the political leaders as to the torpedoing of the steamer San Puloencto, which was bound for England. The crew were saved.
