GERMANY’S SUICIDAL FOLLY.

The New York Times further says that considering Germany’s desperate economic condition, this rousing of the. neutral nations against her means nothing less than that she has committed “political and financial suicide.” “Why,” it asks, “should the German Government persist in its direct and swift approach toward the dreadful conditions that inevitably must be visited upon the German people if it drives the world into hostile action? Germany’s U-boats will not avail her, will not save her. 1 Undoubtedly she has' very much overestimated their destructive efficiency, and has not at all 'taken into account what her present foes and the neutral nations will do to bring her-to reason. If reason has not altogether fled from German minds now is the time, with earnestness and_good faith, to renew / proposals of peace. The path Germany has marked out for herself, if she follow it, will indeed speedilj end the': war, but it will end in overwhelming disaster for her.” , ;

And as showing that the people of the United States have at last lost patience, the New York Times declares that the national support to President Wilson in the action he is taking has been, not only immediate, but has been made with one voice. “He has,” it says, “the support of a united people, he will,have.it in whatever measures he may find it necessary to take. With respect to the conflict raging, in Europe- there has been, as was natural, some division of opinion im the country. As we.ourselves within the shadow of war, there can be -no division of opinion or of loyalty. - Citizens of the) United states, of whatever race or origin, will be loyal to: their Government, they will sustain it. They can take no other coarse, for if we mast - make waf, it willbe war in the defence of our rights, our lawful rights, trampled upon by Germany. She is the
