Mr , Clark, assistant director at the Wanganui Technical College, is conducting a teachers’ handwork! class in Auckland with 75 in attendance.

Mr F. W. Hart, who has resigned the secretaryship of We Wanganui Branch of tne Public Service Association, on account of his leaving the district to go into camp,'has held the position, for three years. At a meeting of the committee last evening a vote of thanks was passed to the retiring secretary, and '"1-s resignation was accepted with regret.

Hon. Major James O’Sullivan, Inspector of Equipment and Ordnance Stores, on Wednesday retired from active duty in the Defence Department at his own request, aftet neary thirty-nine years’ continuous service, during sixteen years of which he was in charge of tie Defence Stores Branch.

Captain-Chaplain Eieohards, formerly Roman Catholic parish priest of Bawarden, who joined the Main New Zealand Expeditionary Force in Egypt, and was through the Gallipoli campaign, and is now in France, has been awarded the Military Cross.

Members of the' Wanganui Branch of the New Zealand Law Society met at the Magistrate’s Court House this afternoon to oid farewell to Mr P. H. Hart,. Deputy Registrar of the Supreme Court and Clerk of the Magistrate’s Court, who has resigned his position in order to go. into camp with the Reinforcements which leave here on Monday next.

At St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church last evening Mr F. Milne, home missionary at Kai Iwi, Maxwelltown, Rapanui and Brunswick, who has resigned in order to go to the front, was entertained at a farewell social. The Rev. J. D. McKenzie occupied the chair, and there was a large attendance. Speeches eulogistic of Mr Milne’s work and expressing good wishes for his future, were delivered by Mr Scott (representing the euseion), and Mr. Simpson (representing, the Board of Management), and Mr Georg© Bruce. Mr Milne made an ap-. propriate reply.' During the evening an interesting wan submitted. ; The presentation of a “scrap of paper” to Mr Milne was an interesting part of the programme. One of the most successful as well as .being one of the most extensive poultry farms’ in the Manawatu district is situate at Oroua Downs. The farm is stocked with over 3000 head, of poultry. The owner’s returns this season have , averaged from £9o' to £IOO per month, the highest; monthly receipts yet received being £160.' In spite of the high cost of grain add feed generally* the owner expects to have a turnover ot £IOOO for the present season. The suburb of Kensington (Melbourne) wak the scene of a very unusual event the other evening, when the wife of Mt Michael Keogh, contractor, of Footecray Eoad, was safely delivered of four children—three boys and a girl—at the earns birth (says the Melbourne Argus of ths 11th ult.). Mother and children were • doing, well until .yesterday afternoon, when two of the male infants died. The trying heat of the day, in conjunction with the fact that the birth was premature, militated against all the infants surviving. Mrs Keogh is making satisfactory progress towards recovery. Prior to Tuesday’s event five children had already been born to Mr and Mrs Keogh during the ten years of their married life. Of these four survive, the eldest, a girl, being nine years old. Both parents of this interesting family ai* in the prime of life—between 30 and 40 years of age.
