AMUSEMENTS AND MEETINGS
EVERYBODY’S. WICKED NEW YORK.” Pa the Freree, makers of the mightv “Les Miserables,” have now rivalled that splendid picture by producing the wonderful Gold Rooster feature play, ‘‘Wicked New York,” which begins at Everybody’s Theatre to-night. The Dominion, writing of the Wellington exhibitions of the film, said; “Wicked New York,” the sensational five-act drama which has been packing the Empress Theatre with people this week, is a telling study of the underworld of life in that amazing city of pace, greed, splendour, and vulgar ostentation of newly acquired wealth and the bubbling maelstrom of barely concealed vice. Here Florence Reed, the emotional actress whose magnificent aft is stamped on many recent dramatic successes, has splendid scop© for the display of her remarkable talent, and with a strong supporting cast the production gives an impressive picture of the human side of “Little Old New York.” The supporting items are a gbod selection. Enticing supports-will include: “Pearl of the Assola Valley” (scenic), “Mutt and .1 : . in Revenge is Sweet” (a very clever cartoon), “The Snail,” (Gaumont nature study), and “Which Way Did He go?” (Vitagraph comedy). HIS MAJESTY’S. “THE CAPTIVE GOD.” “The Captive God,” in six acts that teem with stirring incidents, and one of the film sensations of the year, will be presented at His Majesty’s Theatre tonight, It cost £50,000 to produce, and so strong is it drawing power that the outlay has been thoroughly justified b big receipts. That sterling, actor Wm. S. Hart appears as the hero, and is credited with eclipsing all his previous work. This big spectacular success is descril'■ as “combining all the intense dramatic thrills of “The Fighting Parson” with the panoramic glory of the great Roman pageant “Cabiria.” The action of the play is set in ancient Mexico, at the time when Montezuma, Emperor of the now extinct Aztec nation, ruled the most powerful and intelligent people on the continent. Hundreds of persons participate in the magnificent pageants that form part of the drama, and the rich costumes of the period are genuinely splendid. Enid Markey, always conspicuous for good work, is said to show up especially well as the daughter of the Emperor Mantezuma, Patrons may confidently look forward to something out of the common. Other subjects include “Kernel Nut and High Shoes” (Comedy!. ‘Some Garden Pests (Pathe colour study), and the latest Gaumont Graphic. The list reaches the highest standard.
