The funeral of the popular jockey, Danny Maher, was attended by rich and poor alike, by the titled .and the untitled. Lord Rosebery, bareheaded, walked froni the cemetery gates to the graveside alongside the motor-borne coffin. Needless to say, there were numerous beautiful wreaths, Lord Rosebery’s being inscribed, “From his faithful friend.” Prince Leopold of Battenberg forwarded one: “In affectionate memory,” while that of Lord Derby bore the words: “A token of great regard and sincere regret.” A specially-pdthetic emblem was that from “His sorrowing mother and sisters in U.S.A.” King George has entered three colts for the 1918 Two Thousand Guineas, so it is evcident he has no intention of dropping out of racing. It is expected that the totalisator, which was recently legalised in New South Wales, will not be' used at Randwick until the spring meeting. It appears from correspondence received from Sydney, that the Australian Jockey Club is at its wits’ end to know where to put the machines, as the club is greatly hampered for room. WANGANUI TROTTING CLUB. ’ln view of the fact that the Wanganui Trotting Club is offering such good prize money for its meeting on the 23rd and 26th of February, it is not surprising to learn that owners' of trotters and pacers in all parts of the Dominion are interesting themselves in the gathering. From the ’ many inquiries ’made by outside owners it is safe to say that the nominations, which are due on Saturday, the 3rd February, will be the best ever received by' the club. The Cup is worth £2OO and the big money the second day £l5O, so that every inducement is held out to those owning top-notch trotters to' race their horses at the meeting. In addition, the stake money in the other events is on a liberal scale, and big fields should be the order.
