THRICE A HERO.
The King .it Buckingham Palace received Mrs La Touche Congreve, the widow of Major La Touohe Congreve, and handed to her the V.C.,-the D.5.0., and the Military Cross which her husband had been awarded. During the period preceding an attack he carried out personal reconnaissance of the enemy lines, and after an unsuccessful attack he returned to the front line to ascertain the situation, and while in the act of writing his report was shot. He had been previously recommended for capturing two officers and 72 men practically single-handed, but was given the D.S.O. and the M.C. In recognition of his bravery the French authorities made him a Chevalier of the Legion of Honour. The son of Lieut.-General W. N. Congreve, G. 8., Y.C., he married Miss Pamela Cynthia Maude, the daughter of Mr Cyril Maude, on Jupe 1 last. He was the first officer in the British Army to win the three coveted distinctions. The King, in handing to Mrs Congreve the three awards, said how deeply both he and the Queen!regretted that so gallant an officer Had been called upon to make the supreme sacrifice.
