RUSSIA'S POLITICAL SITUATION.
FULL OF DRAMATIC INTEREST. ' (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.) LONDON, January 23. The Daily Telegraph’s Petrograd correspondent says the political situation is full of dramatic interest. The cause is the curious jumble of ancient ritual and modern superstition. The attitude of the average Russian is bewildered suspense. He awaits developments with stubborn faith. It is. unwise to exaggerate the present mood, which is essentially ephemeral. The Czar’s rescript is the most favourable indication of Russia’s devotion to the Allied cause. The Morning Post’s Petrograd correspondent says much of the unrest is due to the failure of communication, preventing food reaching cities and towns; and a wasteful, costly system of distribution, the whole cost of which falls on the consumer. The rescript aims at reorganising railways and waterways in the national interests.
