WANGANUI RIVER TRUST.
A meeting of the Wanganui Eiver Trust was held on Friday last, 19th instant. There were present; Messrs T, D. Cummins (chairman), T. B. Williams, Alfred Burnett, J. H. Burnett, and the Mayor (Mr C. E. Mackay). The chairman reported that for want of funds no other work than repairs to the plant had been undertaken. The plant was now in good condition and available for work. A letter had been received from the Under-Secretary of the Lands Department stating that <£soo of the subsidy had been forwarded to meet the Trust’s financial obligations, and that the Minister would on his arrival from the South Island confer with the Trust as to further finances. It rvaa owing to the low conditions of the river, to immediately start one party to work between Pipiriki and Wanganui, snagging the channel and repairing the walls that have suffered damage during recent floods. As the funds of the Trust after paying the Trust’s liabilities would not allow of further expenditure till the Minister met the Trust, it was decided to requisition Ji2so from the Domain Board’s funds. The letter from the Under-Secretary was as follows: Bth January, ‘‘The Minister instructs me to advise yon that ho left for the South Island on a short holiday yesterday, and that ho had authorised the immediate payment of ,£SOO to the Wanganui Eiver Trust to enable it to meet its financial obligations. Upon his return the Minister will if possible, visit Wanganui and meet yon and the Eiver Trust Board with a view to considering what further suras are necessary for the purposes of the Trust.” The chairman was instructed to write to the Under-Secretary pointing out tho necessity for the work being proceeded with as the conditions were at present favourable to the work being taken in hand, and urging the visit of the Minister.
, Sundry correspondence was dealt with and accounts passed for payment.
It was decided that the Bank overdraft guaranteed by Messrs Hatrick and Co., should be extinguished, and that in the future the Trust should rely on subsidy and its own incom£ from tolls and rentals.
