ALLIES REPULSE ATTACKS.
RUSSIAN SUBMARINE ACTIVITY. ( TEN VESSELS SUNK. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association, Received January 23, 10.30 a.m. LONDON, January 2. A French communique states that after a violent bombardment the Germans yester-eve attacked north of Carroth’s Wood, on the right bank of the Meuse. Our artillery and machine-gun fire twice broke the attacks. We held the whole of our front. There was active artilleryiug during the night on a sector of Pepner Hill. A wireless Russian official message states: In the direction of Kovel the enemy took the offensive and entered our trenches southward of Rudkamirmskair. Our reserves drove out the enemy.
Attempts to advance in the Oituz Valley were arrested. Our submarine sank a steamer and nine schooners in the Bosphorus.

ESTIMATE OF GERMAN CAPTURES. (Reuter.) Received January 23, 10 a.m. LONl)ON, January 22. The Morning Post’s correspondent at Lassy states that a most generous estimate of the wheat captured by the enemy in Ronmania shows that it totals a little over a million tons of maize., and there was also a similar quantity bf maize.
