Mr E. C. Fletcher, accountant in the AVauganui branch of the National Bank of New Zealand, leaves in a day or two for a couple of mouths’ relieving duty at Reefton. Captain Morgan ' received cable advice yosteiday that Sergeant William Elvina .vlcrgan had embarked for England ou Oct her Bth by the hospital ship Panama. Tlio death occurred suddenly on Monday morning of Mr Daniel Thurston, senr., at hii res.deuce, Ltuwai, Apiti, at the age of C 8 years. He was very well known in Palmerston and Eau’gitikei districts, having been proprietor of the Martou Hotel for some 29 years. Details concerhing the death of Lieutenant Desmond F. Kettle, sou cf Mr 0. C. Kittle, S.M., who died while fighting on the Gallipoli Peninsula, have just been received fr.m an officer who participated in the charge in which Lieutenant Kettle was killed. He says: "it is with feelings more of pride than of condolence that I pen these few linos in reference to Lieutenant Desmond Kettle’s glorious end. One can rest assured he died upholding all cur highest ideals of manhood and traditions cf our race. He was badly wounded in the charge, hut went on gallantly leading his men until the last. The next day his body was found in a Turkish trench with two dead Turks. We have every reason to be proud of him—he die! a death few are privileged to die. Ho was indeed a hero.”
