A PRISONER OF WAR.
WANGANUI LAO IN CONSTANTINOPLE. Mr T. H, Nixon, of the Metropolitan Hotel, has received the following letter from Ids nephew, Private W. Surgenor, of the Wellington Infantry, now a prisoner of war in Constantinople;— Maltipa, Hospital Militaire, Constantinople. , August 2oth, 1915. Dear Uncle Tom, — Just a few lines to let you know 1 am still alive, and nearly well. I was hit in two places, one on the cheek, and the other through the right ear and down the scalp. Both are quite better now, ■no 1 hope to be out of here soon, and be perhaps doing some work. Our treatment here, and coming here, was really good. We have been visited by the American Consul, and he has treated us well. He left some money for us to buy such luxuries as matches, cigarettes, and tobacco with. Any odds and ends we require he brings us, and he must have a good stuff to look after all of us, especially as we are a good deal scattered. AVe are in a very airy and sweet-smell-ing ward, and have everything we wish within, reason. The only drawback is the strange language, which we are rather slow in picking up. Some of the Wanganui boys are with me, but 1 don’t think you would know them. I have written home, and will be writing again shortly. We eet writing material Imre very cheap. What we have seen bf the place is pwHtv. The park is a long way ahead of Cook’s Gardens from i scenic point of view. I don’t suppose I will be able to tell you anything much about the place. It is quite a treat to get into sheets again after being so long without. The boys here arc all very well on it. and as hpppy as can be expected, though of course we would much sooner be in a New Zealand hospital. We have a fair Amount'd! reading matter, thanks to the American Consul, who supplies our every want.
