Ihe NN'averley-NVaitotnrn Racing Club's annual nice meeting was held yesterday, when the. weather conditions were not favourable, heavy showerk fa Min" betCeen 11 and* 12 o’clock, and interfering with the attendance, which was large, hut not up to last year’s record. The lain rrtiule the. track heavy, and the • greasy” nature of the going spoilt th > chances of some of the horses ,and led tc the times being slow. However, tho racing was very interesting, big fields and close fininshes being the order u> the day, and Mr George Morse had every reason to be well satisfied witli the way his handicapping worked out. The popular secretary. Mr NV. MncfaiInne. had the* 1 arrangements well in hand, and the day’s sport was gor through in a manner which reflected credit on all concerned, though it was unfortunate that the time-table was not adhered to more strictly, but the delay yesterday was caused by a. variety ol circumstances which were perhaps n;i----r voidable. Speculation was not as brisk as at last year’s hiceting, but a lot ol coney was shut out in several of tintaces, which was probably the reason tor tho shortage. The sum of £18.30-1 was machined, as against £20,118 Inst year, a deficiency of £lßll, fit-ill, the. meeting must have resulted in a considerable profit, and this wil 1 bo very ■ r atif>ing, the more so ns any surplus is to go to the patriotic funds. The NVanganui Garrison Band, under DepntyOonductor Mr H. Briggs, rendered a programme of 'music which wah greatly ■iiipreciatod by the crowd. By the wav, the hand's platform was situated within a small enclosure on the lawn, und this ■was an innovation which inighi.be copied to advantage by the NVanganni Jockey Club, as the crowd was prevented .from 'limping up on to tho nlatform to watch tho races and disturbing the baud';■.lands, etc. Dustin's Ltd. provided a

first class luncheon and als afternoon tea, and did good business, as did also Mr Tom Nixon, who had charge of the 1 iiiUican’s booth.
