CAPTURE OF HOHENZOLLERN REDOUBT

ANOTHER BRITISH TRIUMPH. SPLENDID WORK BY THE INFANTRY.

(Times and Sydney Sun Special Services.) . LONDON’, October 25. A correspondent at the British headquarters says;— Our capture of the kernel of the Hohenzollem Redoubt has been maintained, and the ground won had the most tangible effect on our attack on October 13lh, and was another triumph for the tenacity of the British infantry. The attack was launched at 2 o clock, after a severe bombardment of gas. The enormous strength of the German first-line fortress was revealed, as. despite the heavy artillery preparam«n a vio * en t cross-lire from machine guns, yet they made a brilliant first advance. While the centre streamed into the main trench of the redoubt the right and left wings hurled themselves on the communication trenches. The men were over-impetuons in the wing attacks, and were compelled to give ground under the German machine gun fire. They sheltered in the innumerable shell-holes with which the redoubt is pockmarked. The ■truggle reached itself into a test of endurance and combats by bombing partie®. While some, under the cover of smoke bomba, consolidated the position in the kernel, others forced their way up the trenches stretching out from the centre. Bombs were continually used in large numbers, and our losses due to this arm were heavy, but the enemy's were greater. This sort of confused fighting puts a premium on personal initiative and coolness. The correspondent says; I have heard of few finer stories than that of a colonel who was shot in the knee, but was discovered silting up, wrapped in a rug, directing the fight. The struggle for the Hohenzollem Redoubt was only an episode in a huge whole, but the fact that we maintained and slightly increased our 2 ,1. BOCCC6B ’ n aco strong German positions and repeated heavy ■belling is encouraging.
