Amusements, Meetings, Etc.

“THE SPOILERS.” AT HIS MAJESTY'S THEATRE TO-NIGHT. Patrons at His Majesty’s Theatre tonight will see the first screening of the remarkable film adaptation of Rex Beach’s book. This remarkably well-written story is probably the greatest favourite of all [ his books, and no doubt this prompted the Selig Company in their choice of ■ which of this author’s many works should be singled out for screen adaptation. No expense was spared by the company to retain in the production all the wonderful, thrill, romance, and rugged and picturesque scenes and characters so well described in the book. One of the most remarkable personages in the picture is the adventuress, Cherry Malotte, and in the great gambling scene where Glenister wagers his interest in the “M'das” against the saloon of the “Broncho Kid,” Miss Kathlyn Williams, as Cherry, provides a wonderful characterisation. She assists the gambler to rum the miner, and at the critical moment saves Glenister from ruin by the cards wrong. The great fight between McNamara and Glenister is depicted with a fidelity that makes the audience gasp. Another tense time for the beholders is the attack upon the mines by the “Vigilantes,” and alarmingly realistic is the dynamiting of the “Midas.” Helen Chester’s trip with the rascally Struve to the lonely house to secure the papers, and his attack her, which was so dramatically ended bv a shot through the window, are faithfully depicted. Auckland papers sneak in hrms of universal praise of “The in its picture form, and there, as in America and Australia, it is drawing sensational patronage. The film will take the whole of the evening at His Majesty’s, and a feature of the entertainment will he the special orchestral music. The plan is at Allden’s Book Store, and the bookings are‘very large. Under the auspices of the Patriotic Committee, Mr -S. Butler’s juvenile choir oi 300 voices will give an entertainment in the Opera House on Friday evening and Saturday afternoon next. The programme will consist of the singing by the massed choir of patriotic choruses, etc., and the performance (by 100 picked voices) of th.< charming fairy operetta, “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.”
