"All collections now being returned, it , is announced that the graild total of the , special appeal for Red Cross funds held , on Wednesday amounted to T344 18s 2d. | The New South Wales Cabinet hat abandoned the idea of dedicating QovernI ment House and grounds for public ' plea are, and has decided that the State , Governor re-tccupy it. The present Viceregal residence will be transformed into a hospital for returned soldiers. 1 | Since the war started very little has been heard of Sir Ernest Shackleton's Trans-Antarctic Expedition. The expedition is now at its winter quarters somewhere in the WoddelTSea. It is equipped ■ with a wireless receiving apparatus, and . on the first day of every month from the I Admiralty station in the. Falkland Islands messages are despatched. I In the list of' successful candidates for the first medical examination, which was held by the New Zealand University during this month, appear the names of John Campbell McKenzie and Henry Charles Tod, two Wanganui boys. The lads are to be congratulated on their initial success, each having entered the ■ ’Varsity but six months ago. Complaints are made by residents and I campers at Kai Iwi beach of the action : pf a certain person or persons in dumping cartloads of old tins and broken glass j on the beach which bathers and paddlers, old and young, 1 constantly make use of. Tire local authority should investigate, and, if the report be correct, put a stop ■ to such a practice. ' B Company, National Reserve, will parade outside the Drill Hall at 7.30 this evening. A good muster is particularly desired, as important business is to be discussed by members, in addition to which opportunity will be taken to farewell Platoon-Commander A. H. Lewis, 1 who leaves for the N.C.O. training camp • at-Trentham on Tuesday; l j The Military Hospital Guild Rooms will ■ be open from '2 to 6 p.ra. on Monday. The hon. secretary (Mrs Suisted) will be in attendance, and any ladies wishing.to help by spending their holiday in working for the wounded will be welcome. A great deal has to be done to prepare the ca-e of comforts for transit next month. , Personal letters ready for pockets will be acceptable, and gives a chance to those willing to send a cheery word to the wounded men in Egypt. I The never-ceasing wonders of coinciI donee were never perhaps so remarkably illustrated as was the case in connection with a New Zealand soldier, with Wel- , lington relatives, serving his country I abr ad. Feeling the need of somethingoutside the ordinary fare provided by his 1 country, he. entered into the canteen and bought a cake "that looked like m"'th°r’B.” On cutting it onen he fouhd a -silver match-box with his own name inscribed thereon, and inside the match--1 box’ was a, sovereign. The cake had been jnade by his njbther’s own hands, and the Tokens of love included in the ingredients were placed there in the fond belief that there could be no miscarriage. How it found its way to the canteen was never explained, but. the marvel that it should have been purchased, bv the cne t6 whom it had been forwarded seems almost incredible. ■■■■'■
