GERMAN ATTACKS REPULSED.

NEWS CONFIRMED. Press Association.—Telegraph—Copyright. Received October 22, 2.30 p.m. PARIS, October 21. A communique states:—After a violent bombardment, the enemy renewed the attack on a nine kilometres front eastward of Rheiins, at Butte, Detire, and Prunay, using increasingly dense gas clouds. They thrice failed to poneirate our positions. Our machine-guns, supported bv a hurricane of artillery fire, decimated the foe. The Germans finally stopped before our wire entanglements, and were not able to reach our first lino trenches. We also repulsed an attack in the Givenchy wood.

AUSTRALIAN WOUNDED AT HOME.

COMPLAINTS AS TO TREATMENT. Received October 22, 2.45 p.m. LONDON, October 21. Mr B. R. has informed Sir George Reid that he has received wellfounded complaints of neglect from soldiers, which suggested insufficient organisation to deal with the wounded in the hospitals. It is alleged that they do not receive pay, and are unable then to obtain stamps to post letters to friends. When the men leave the hospitals they are penniless and inadequately clad. Mr W’ise adds that the men suffer from cold, and this is regrettable, in view of the large supplies of warm clothing sent from New South Wales. The complaints are all due to want of organisation. Tho War Contingent Committee is ineffective to deal with seven thousand wounded men. Mrs Wise suggests the appointment of an officer controlling a certain number of hospitals to see that-the soldiers’ needs are attended to, and to keep the High Commissioner’s department in touch with tho' men.

ROLL OF HONOUR.

Mrs C. Smith, Marshall Avenue, Wanganui East, received a cable to-day stating that her son. Trooper T. V> . H. Smith, embarked for England on September 30, sick.

PATRIOTIC FUNDS.

CHRISTMAS FRUIT FOR H.M.S. NEW ZEALAND. There are only a few days now to send contributions to the fund to provide the sailors and lower ratings on H.M.S. New Zealand with fruit from this Dominion to supplement their Christmas fare. So far, we have received about £ls for this fund, which will require to be considerably increased if enough fruit is to be sent to go round. These gifts to our sailors are greatly appreciated, as is shown by the many letters m thanks published in the Press. Tire receipt of a gift of fruit at Christmas, in the fog and sleet of the winter season, would be doubly welcome to our gallant sailors.
