DEPARTMENTAL CORRESPOND- / ENCC. . Correspondence, was. received from the Education Department asking the Hoard not to,-in view of present conditions, embark upon any new building work except ,that absolutely npcossary. The Department declined to make a grant for enlargement of Hangiotu school; also to issue , free passes to pupils' going to centres to sit, for proficiency examinations. . '

SCHOOL ACCOMMODATION. , The Senior Inspector reported- that additional room cotild be obtained at Lytton Street (Feilding), by re-arranging the classes, be reported favourably upon an . application, for a school at' Mount Stewart,. and upon the establishment of a 'central school ueaF Ridge Road. Mr Strong reported in favour of a central school on a site. on. the right bank of the Rangitikei river at Omatane. When the new school was opened there would be no need of a school at Ohutu. " A curious position, aad arisen. A - new family had come to the district and , as a result, if the new .site was selected, 3 children would have four, miles to go to school Over A poor ipad, if the . original site was .chosen six children would have 3 miles to go. lie recommended the selection of the new site,'which was adopted. Arrangements were beingmade - for the re-opening of ' the school , at Kauhatea, while- half-time schools had been opened At -Lacy’s Landing and Retaruke. APPLICATIONS FOR GRANTS. Applications fob grants wore dealt with as follows: The Otakeuo committee wanted the school enlarged and offered to contribute£46. It was decided to ask tho committee to find 450, the Board to find ‘,<£'4o with the subsidy on the contribution. An applictdiou whs received from KapOnga for, enlargement of school and for installation of electric light- The Board decided to pay half cost ,of installing'the light and to inform' the committee that thp Government refuse to grant money for additions unless absolutely necessary. Grants were mode for repairs and fencing to the following schools:—Porewa, .£2; Whakamara, 18a; Oroua Downs, ."■£2l'loa;,. Pafeilukura, .£■!• 18s 9d; Sonth Makiriltifi, £5.; Table Flat, .44: Tangiwai, 45; Retaruke, 412; Lacy’s Landing, 46; Ohhkunc, 41,135. \
