YOUNG HELPERS' LEAGUE. A deputation from the Old Land, representing Dr Barnardo’s - Home, : lias ieeu in New Zealand for about twelve months, forming branches of the “Young Helpers’ League,” and has met with considerable success. Already 400 branches >r “Habitations” have been formed in che Dominion, wit'a 12,000 enrolled members. Two members of the deputation Hiss Rachel Norton (general secretary of the League), and Mias Carden (one of the wardens) —are at present in Wanganui' jiving addresses to the school children. The Young Helpers’ League is a voluntary union (composed principally of young people, but also including a large numoer of senior members) of friends of the children from happy Homes, all over the world. It is divided into,two sections; The Junior Companions, who arc under 18 years of age, agree, to do all they can to help the crippled, blind, deaf and dumb, and sick children in. Dr Barnardo’s ’ Homes. The Senior Companions, who'are 18 years of age or over, also offer willing Service on behalf of the League.. . Tuc late Dr Barnardo founded the Y.H.L. in January, 1892, and continued to be its Director and Chief Warden until the time of his death. Her Majesty Queen Alexandra is its Patron, H.R.H. Princess Christian is its President’, and H.R.H. Princess Henry of Bnttcnberg is its PresideutBoya and girls living in nappy homes throughout the wide world are invited to join the Young Helpers’ League and become Companions, which they may do (if under 18), for the payment of Is, which, will procure for them a card of membership, a collecting card or box, and a copy of the monthly Magazine, which contains interesting stories and pictures and accounts of the progress of the League. The subscription for those over 1$ years of age is 2s 6d a year. A pamphlet I issued by the League sets forth:—(There ' are various ways in which you may assist’ (this needy work, (a) Each Companion' lof the League .should offer up the followling prayer at least once a day:— : "Our (Heavenly Father, We pray Thee to bless ■all poor waifs and orphan children fthroughput the world, especially those who arc ill or who arc crippled, and we (ask Thee to fill our hearts with loving ■.desires to help them, for the sake of •fesu.s. Christ , our . Lord. Amen.” (b) . Every Companion of the League /should (endeavour to do something for the behe;fit of. the side children. Boys and girls 'can give'or collect money. Small 'bazaars or sales of. work, may be held, to which I the members of the League can send ■contributions. Boys’ work may comprise i wood-carving, .painting, drawing, illumihi ating, texts, rearing of animals, rigging boats, doing(fretwork, constructing models, etc,, etc, Girl%’ work may consist . of such items as useful and fancy needlework for bazaars, embroidery, the dressing of dolls,, etc. When a good many ; boys and girls, or ladies and gentlemen,' in any town or village or—district join, thev avp united in a Local (Duion called a Habitation (which may afterwards be sub-divided into Lodges), and all the money they collect or give may, if de( sired, go towards supporting a cot in ono of the Hospitals pr Homes founded by the late Dr Barnardo. Each such cot is, as a rule, called by the name of the Lodge or( Habitation which supports, it. Already nearly, five hundred cots are thus being supported, by Habitations- or Lodges One Habitation actually supports fourteen such cots, and there are others which support two, three, four, five, six, or more cots. r
