DUTY ON OIL AND SPIRITS.
MEASURE TO PREVENT EXPLOITATION. (By Telegraph.—Special to “Herald.”) AV ELLINGTON. August 31. A measure to prevent the exploitation of consumers by merchants and sellers of kerosene, petrol, and motor oils and spirits w ill bo introduced this afternoon, and passed as a matter of urgency. The Hill will prohibit the amount of new dutv imposed being added to the prices of any stocks held on or prior to the passing of the resolution by the House last Thursday respecting the Customs tariff. AA’h ere such oil has already been sold at increased prices the sellers will he required to pay the added duty on the oil sold. The Government came to the conclusion that the fixing of the prices on the stocks held would be fairer to consumers than to declare all oil stocks to be in bond for the purpose of paving added duty. In order to prevent existing stocks from being sold as duty paid shipments, the Customs will stamp every case of oil imported since the imposition of the duty, including a shipment now Landing at Auckland.
