AT TIMARU. (Per United Press Association,) TIMARU, August UO. At t!ie Supreme Court, Edwin James ■Steel, an old offender, was sentenced to three years for three cases of theft at CnristciUirch and Makikihi. He asked to be let off so that he could go to the front. Judge Denniston said that might have done in the cld days, but not now. In a case of conspiracy to defraud a bookmaker by delaying a telegram, K. O. MeMurtrie, telegraphist at Waimatc, and Mrs Alice Moore, pleaded guilty. The woman was ordered to cdnic up for sentence when called on. The man was admitted to probation for two years. A ease of sheep-stealing against James Dunnett, a fanner, of Cattle 'Valley, Fairlie, was commenced but not comt'.lered. Dunnett assisted a neighbour, Albert Chapman, who knew little about sheep, aud is charged with stealing eight of them.
