“TRENTS” AT PUTIKI. great interest manifested by ■ PUBLIC. Great in’ereat is being manifested by the citizens of Wanganui in the doings of 0 Company of Hie Trentham Rifle Regiment whi.e the latter are encamped at i’utiki. Yesterday morning the men attended divine service at various churches, in io.vn, and were escorted up the Avenue by the 7th Regimental Band. At the Drill Hall detailt from the 7th Regiment escorted the men to their churches. At Chri-:t Church the Band played during the cffartcry, and afterwards played the men back to camp, back to., camp. In the afternoon the Queen Alexandra Band played at the camp, and the public to.k advantage of this to visit the camp in very large numbers. The camp is situated near the main road on the left-hand side coming towaids town. It is a good site for a camp, the section where the tents are pitched being dry and sandy and on the highest part. It is sheltered from the cold southei ly winds by the hills at- the back of the la-age. The camping-place has natural drainage, and Jias' the additional advantage of being close to the 1 rifle' range, which in a direct line is not mere than a mile away., Tho playing of the Band was listened to by an appreciative audience, and after programme was finished the members were entertained at afternoon tea by the officers of the camp. Tho Band have placed their services at the disposal of tho Patriotic, Committee, and will; play when required. Tho citizens cf the town, individually and collectively, are doing their best to entertain the men off duty, and the Rally Room at Christ Church Schoolroom is likely to prove a popular institution during the time the camp is held here. Y.M.C.A. Throughout the war the Young Men’s Cnristian Association has taken a prominent part in everything that appertains to’ the welfare of the soldiers of the King, both on and off the field. In every part of the Empire the Association is doing something for the men, and in New Zealand the-various branches of the organisation are assisting the Empire wherever possible. Yesterday afternoon the usual stranger’s tea,“at the Y.M.C.A. took the form of a complimentary function to the members of the Earl of Liverpool’s Own Regiment, now in camp at Pntiki. Close on 150 members of the E.L.O’s. we.re present, and judging by the complimentary remarks of the men, they thoroughly enjoyed themselves. The president of the Association (Mr. J. F. Holloway) presided, and gave a very cordial welcome to those present. After tea had been partaken of, the. men adjourned to , the gymnasium, where a short song service was held, and an address given by Air. H. E. Astbury, a member of the board of directors of the The speaker took for his subject “Character Building,” and judging by the attentive manner in which the men listened, the address was much appreciated. Many of the men subsequently took advantage of the various privileges of- the institution, more particularly the writing and reading rooms. It is anticipated that during the week tlie rooms will be largely used by , our. visitors, who will be pleased to know that a cup of tea or coffee, can be obtained on .the Association’s premises at a very nominal charge. Quite a large number of magazines have already been sent into the Association, for the use of the ,mfen in camp, hut there is yet plenty of need in that direction,
