The gift afternoon, ana Xmas tree and sale of work at tho Central Infants’ School yesterday afternoon was a great success. It is just a week ago since Miss Alexander (head mistress) called the first meeting of mothers, and yesterday the handsome sum cf £56 was taken in a little over three hours. The mothers and friends of the school are to be highly praised for the way they worked, and the handsome result_ must make them feel very proud. Miss E. Alexander, who has always taken a great, interest in the school, declared the sale open, and was presented by a little maid with a bouquet of carnations and roses. Mr F. Pirani (chairman of tho Education Board) spoke a few words, and several little songs were given by the infants. Then business began. The Xmas tree, a huge one at the end of the hall, in charge of Mrs (Dr.) Gregg, was in a very short time completely dismantled. The bran tub (Miss Graham) and ice cream stall (Mrs H. Price) were great meeting places for the kiddies, while tho beautifully decorated and arranged sweets and flower stalls also did wonderful business. Mrs Finny bnd the former, and Mesdamca Quinn and Sutherland were iu charge of the latter. Mcsdamcs Darbyshire, Hill, and White, had charge of the produce stall, and Mesdames Walker, Syman. and Broadhead did splendid business with the jumble stall. The infants’ work stall was presided over by Mesdames Westbrook and Miss Marshall. The large tea room was also a great success. The ladies hero, Mesdames Gifford-Mbbre. W. Hall, Cox, and Jones, are deserving of great praise and the busy time they had must have pleased them. Later in the afternoon Mr M. Hogan auctioned the goods left. The "decorations throughout' were" in the Belgian colours. Special thanks are due to Messrs Finny and Gilbert, who did good work in fitting up the stalls, also to the teachers who gave assistance in every way, while to the old boys and girls, and parents, and friends of the school. Miss Alexander is deeply grateful for the generous way they sent donations, and attended, to make the affair the grand succgss it was.
