RESULTLESS EFFORTS AT REOPENING. Received September 21, 2.15 p.m. NEW YORK, September 20. Banking interests state that every effort has been made to secure the re-opening of the stpek exchange without results. None of the suggestions put forward would prevent the liquidation of Europe’s enormous holdings of American securities, even if America could finance the purchase. CABLE DELAYS. Received September 21, 2.15 p.m. SYDNEY, September 21. The Chamber of Commerce is asking the Eastern and Pacific Cable authorities to reduce the cable rates, owing to the extra cost of transmitting in plain language. Both Cable Boards arc considering tho matter, hut the Eastern is already overloaded, and is unlikely to obtain any further increase of traffic by reducing the rates. The manager states that Australiaat present is better served by cable than any other country. Tho delay on the China route is much greater. THE WAR FUNDS. Further additions to tho "Herald” Fund include a- gift of a cavalry horse, valued at .£25, from Mrs Adrian Higgle, Mangamahu ; Rev. Spencer, £lO, £5 each to British and Belgian Food Funds; Mr John Jones, £SO, £25 each to British and Belgian Food Funds. Mr J. Jones rocontlv ■ donate'! .a section of land in aid of tho patriotic funds, and the section has found a. purchaser. Part of the proceeds is to bo devoted to the London poor and Belgian funds. Mr C. E. Mackav drew no the deeds for tho transfer of the property free of cost.
