THEFT OF GOLD.

(Per United Tress Association.! AUCKLAND, February 18. A daring theft is reported from Tirau. Two days ago a member of a private company whose workii arc in the vicinity of the town, with a bag in his possession containing about .£SO in gold and a number of cheques, called at one of the business promises in the township, and while there had occasion to go outside for a few minutes, asking a friend to keep an eye on the hag. The friend had his attention distracted a few minutes, and on reluming to his trust found the bag gone. The police arc making inquiries.
