ULSTER AND HOME RULE.
THE GOVERNMENT’S PLAN
Press Association—Telegraph—Copyright LONDON, February 15.
The Chronicle says the Government’s plan is not the exclusion of Ulster, but an administrative autonomy of a most generous character, including control of education, licensing, and police, also a Board of Appointments to prevent partiality in the nominations to public offices; and finally an effective check on legislation calculated to work adversely to Ulster’s interests.
Mr Walter Long, in a letter to the newspapers, commenting on Mr Redmond’s coneilia\ory language, points out tile present experience of Richard Kingston, of Curracloagh. County Cork, who has been boycotted since 1910 by the Irish League. All investigators of the case condemned it except Mr Redmond and Stephen Gwynne. THE KING’S ATTITUDE, Received February 17, 9.20 a.m. LONDON, February 16. The King’s presence at the match at Twickenham is interpreted as a desire to show his personal concern in Ireland’s crisis. His attendance was the more noteworthy as he did not visit the Welsh match on the same ground. WHAT THE DAILY CITIZEN SAYS. Received February 17, 9.20 a.m. LONDON, February 16. The Daily Citizen, commenting on the present conversations .of the King and Premier on the whole Irish matter, says the Right Hon. H. H. Asquith, like the King, cannot afford to let slip the opportunity of showing his hand wherever Irish sentiment is concerned. The Daily Citizen mentions the growing signs of Liberal revolt owing to the proposals for a compromise, and adds; It is suggested that court influences made themselves felt. There will be much suspense in Liberal circles until Mr Asquith announces his intentions. Meanwhile the results of the pending bye-elections are expected to have a considerable influence on his decision.
