WANGANUI BEAUTIFYING SOCIETY’S CARNIVAL.

GENERAL .MEETING LAS!' NIGHT.

.Mr C. \V. Babbage (vice-president)pre-sided over a well-attended meeting of the general committee of fhe Wanganui Beautifying Society’s Carnival lad night in the Council Cliamliers.

PROGRESS REPORT.—The secretary, Mr W. 11. Gibson, presented a progress report, which was adopted. In it he mentoned that mme of, the committee meetings, particularly (hose of the ladies, had been poorly attended. Ho pointed out the importance of the Carnival as an advertising medium for the town of Wanganui, and urged all supporters to attend the meetings and offer (heir services to the committee. The chief work done, he said, has boon the publishing of the “Booster.” Tlie Carnival Queen election has been succoisfullv launched, and has been taken up enthusiastically. Energetic committees wore at work furthering Die candidature of their choice. A good meeting of cyclists and others interested in the procession and cycle gymkhana had been hold, and very good work was reported. A great procession was promised. The main procession through the town will ecu; ist of decorated bicycles, motor-cars, baud. Carnival Qiiocu, ladies-in-waiting, military escort, tableaux, and band. The Eire Brigade was making elaborate preparations. Mr W r il)iamson had offered to look after the bowling competition. Mr Matheson, of the Coalbrookdale Copipany, has offered a ton of coal; Mr Rankin has offered to stage a farce, and Mr Davis had offered to do likewise Mr Morgan had ordered the fireworks material, and will commence dircctlv to get the pieces ready. Messrs Sherrill and Howor’h had very generomly given valuable oil-paint-ings to be disposed of as the committee think fit. The secretary pointed out that there was’s'ill plenty of room for helpers, of whom a number wore required. RAFFLE.—The Minister of Internal Affairs wrote giving the committee permission to raffle a gold nugget, and advising the committee of the conditions under which the rattle is to he held. NO FLYING-MACHINE. The Prime Minister wrote ttatiug that was impossible to grant the committee's request to fly the New Zealand aeroplane Britannia at the Carnival, as the engagement between Lieutenant Hammond and the Auckland Exhibition authorities had hern terminated, and that (here was no one else in New Zealand who could fly the machine. CEREMONIAL.—A committee consisting of Messrs Wray. Izett. J. Brown, Allan Howg. William Halle, and .lack were appointed* to attend to the entertainment and coronation ceremonies at the crowning of the Queen. EV E NIN G ENTERTAINMENT. —Permis ion having been given by the Jockey Club, it was decided to hold the evening portion of the programme on the Racecourse, instead of Cook's Gardens, as was formerly proposed. _ ~ ARAMOHO ZOO.- Mr Robinson reported having interviewed the proprietress of the Aramoho Zoo. and that that lady had said the committee was welcome to the loan of anything in the Zoo.—lt was decided to thank the proprietress,' for her kind offer. ~, ~ . . % LADIES' COMMITTEE.—Mrs Smsted reported progress in the ladies rommi tee s work. Fhe said .that there was a great deal to be done, and few workers were offering.
