TERRIFIC GALE IN THE CHANNEL Pi ess Association—Telegraph—Copyright. - LONDON, February 14. A terrific gale is raging in the Channel. STEAMER LOST WITH ALL HANDS. LONDON, February 14. Land’s End coastguards espied a ship’s punt with throe men a mile off, and being rapidly driven shorewards before heavy seas. They summoned • a rocket army brigade four miles away, and a tragic race ensued. Just as tne brigade reached the top of the cliff the boat was caught by a huge wave and dashed on to the rocks and smashed to pieces. Tile crew disappeared - under mountainous seas. The three men are believed to ho part of the crew of the steamer Arnsido, of Sunderland, which is supposed to Jiave foundered with all hands. The Arnsidc carried twelve hands. ANOTHER STEAMER LOST. ALL BUT THE CAPTAIN PERISH. LONDON, February 14. The three-masted cargo steamer. My Own, laden with cement, was struck by heavy seas. The hatches were smashed and admitted water to tiie hold, as a result of which the vessel sank at Shoreham. The crew of eight were drowned. The captain clung to the rigging till the morning and was rescued by a lifeboat. SNOWSTORMS IN UNITED STATES. SEVENTEEN DEATHS. NEW YORK. February 14. Severe snowstorms are raging along the north-east coast. The upper Hudson valley is two feet deep in snow. r '■importation systems are everywhere d■ ■ located. Seventeen deaths are reported. One hundred and thirty-nine ’deaths have occurred owing to cold. several frozen bodies were found in the street.
