AROHA MOUNTAIN FIRE.

VALUABLE BUSH DESTROYED. (Per United Press Association.! AUCKLAND, January 18. The fire on To Aroha Mountain is subsiding. On Friday evening the fringe of flame a mile long advanced slowly down on the town, and was watched by hundreds of people. Hugo trees, 60ft high, were levelled in an incredibly short time, and the blaze made when the flames caught the big Nikau trees caused great illuminations. The natural bush and plantations were destroyed*, and will take years to replace. Late on Friday night the heat became intense. The heat continued yesterday, and with the dense smoko hanging over the district and town existence was made almost intolerable. Conditions are pleasanter to-day, and the danger- to the town is past.
